In the late 1970s a small group of pioneers came together to share their marketing knowledge, experience and support in the then new field of marketing A/E/C professional services.
Members of this group called themselves “BD Anonymous” because many employers didn’t like the idea of marketers networking, and many were forced to meet surreptitiously at the infamous Iron Horse Restaurant (flyers weren’t even printed).

The San Francisco Chapter of SMPS was incorporated in 1982, primarily by the efforts of Bill Hankinson, who before coming to the Bay Area, was active in the early days SMPS National. In 2005, the Chapter named its lifetime achievement awards in Bill’s honor - the William B. Hankinson Memorial Founders' Award for Lifetime Achievement. Although Bill never served as our chapter’s president, he remained a mentor and active chapter leader, and served as National President in 1979 – 1980. In 1993 Bill was honored with the prestigious National Marketing Achievement Award (in memoriam).
