Community Involvement

Charity of the Year

As a member of the AEC community for well over 20 years, SFBAC feels that it’s important to support fellow non-profits, particularly within the diverse Bay Area region we support.  The 2008-2009 SFBAC Board chose The Architectural Foundation of San Francisco (AFSF) as our charitable organization, and the 2009-2010 SFBAC Board has since decided to continue to support AFSF for a second year.

The Architectural Foundation of San Francisco is a nonprofit educational organization that involves San Francisco elementary and secondary students in a mentored appreciation of architecture, engineering, construction and the design process. San Francisco reigns as one of the most architecturally significant and beautiful cities in the world. The environment of architectural diversity is extremely important to the vitality of this great city. Everywhere, the vibrant and complex layering of landscape, color, cultures and light produces experiences that unexpectedly reveal themselves.

It is a rich laboratory to be shared as a great learning environment. Our mission is to educate emerging generations of San Franciscans towards an increased awareness of the impact architecture and design have on their built environment. This will, in turn, enhance the quality of life and future viability of our magnificent City of San Francisco. We seek to share with children the passion and pride that those who shape the physical environment have for San Francisco.

Since its inception in 1990, the Architectural Foundation of San Francisco has endeavored to reach out to the general public to establish an open dialog on the architectural future of this community.  During the past five years, AFSF has sharpened its focus with the goal of supporting elementary and secondary students to observe, understand, and be active in shaping the built environment in which they live. The AFSF's programs help children, and their teachers and parents, learn through the power of architecture and the design process. Central to our success is active collaboration, involving members of the community in meaningful and sustainable interactions with students.
